Our Trauma, DFV & Brain Science Informed Approach

We understand that our past experiences, especially trauma and DFV (including coercive control), are stored not just in our memories, but in our bodies and nervous systems. Our therapeutic work is designed to gently and safely address these deep-rooted patterns when you are ready at your pace.

Neurobiology-informed

We use insights from neuroscience, including principles from the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT), and Polyvagal Theory to help you understand how your brain responds to stress and trauma, empowering you to consciously reshape neural pathways for resilience.

Trauma and DFV-Informed

We prioritize creating a safe, respectful, and transparent environment. Our practice is grounded in principles of safety, trustworthiness, and collaboration, with a strong awareness of the impacts of domestic and family violence, including coercive control.

Client-Centered

Your journey is unique. We tailor our approach to meet your individual needs, drawing from various modalities to help you achieve your personal goals.

E.M.D.R. THERAPY

E.M.D.R. (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) THERAPY

Is an evidence-based, therapy which, like R.E.M sleep, allows processing of memories; while being safely-grounded in the present - to avoid retraumatisation. An oversimplification is that E.M.D.R allows memories which are stored in our brain's 'danger detector' (amygdala) to get a 'time-stamp' (ie in-the-past, and get stored in our brain's 'life-story/narrative keeper' (hippocampus), so that when we are reminded of it, our brains can discern that the event is in the past; and hence, no longer a threat to us. This allows us to move from merely surviving-the-moment; to planning, and actioning, steps towards thriving (since when we think of that adverse event we can now also recall adaptive information from positive memories too - to give us context).

ADVANTAGES OVER OTHER THERAPIES

"[EMDR Therapy] is focussed on the symptoms and conducted in session

  • EMDR has comparable results to that of other trauma treatments such as exposure therapy, but over a much shorter timeframe

  • Clients do not have to talk in detail about their trauma" per EMDRAA.org
